138th Open Championship | Cink, Watson & The Claret Jug
In the end, the 138th Open Championship was just a little too long for Tom Watson. The 59-year-old, so close to writing an almost unimaginable chapter in golf history, bogeyed the final hole of regulation to fall into a tie with Stewart Cink, who had birdied it a few minutes earlier. That sent the two Americans to a four-hole playoff, where Cink prevailed for his first major title. PGA/Turner Sports Interactive
The Claret Jug is without doubt the most famous trophy in the game of golf. Commissioned in 1872 but completed in 1873, this elegant trophy – officially called the Golf Champion Trophy – was first presented to Tom Kidd, the 1873 champion, but Kidd was not the first name to be inscribed on it. That honour went to Young Tom Morris, the 1872 champion, even though the trophy had not been completed when he won the event.
